Women and Dry Eye Symptoms

More than 20 million people in the United States are affected by dry eye. Women, particularly older women, report more dry eye problems than men do. Females have higher estrogen and lower androgen hormone levels, which play important roles in dry eye syndrome. In older women, post menopausal hormone changes and estrogen therapy are contributing factors. Systemic conditions associated with females, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, Sjogren's syndrome, erythematous, and other autoimmune diseases also contribute to secondary dry eye problems.

Dry eye is defined as a multifactoral disease of the tears and ocular surface which result in symptoms of discomfort, burning, stinging, redness, foreign body sensations, excessive tearing and even visual disturbance. Symptoms usually worsen throughout the day and are often associated with extended office computer use. Typically, an office environment presents additional confounding factors, such as dry air from A/C units.

Dry eye treatment options include artificial tears, nutritional supplements like fish oil and flaxseed supplements (omega 3), small collagen plugs called punctual plugs to decrease tear flow from the eye, and a medication called Restasis which helps inflammation and increases tear production. Additionally, proactive treatment options that focus on contributing factors include proper computer placement and use, being mindful of air quality, and even the use of certain systemic medications.

Be sure to discuss your symptoms, any general health conditions, medications, and work/home environmental factors with your eye doctor. They can diagnose dry eye syndrome during a visit and will discuss the appropriate treatment option for you.
